At the heart of my lecture is the notion of application, which comes from the Latin applicāre and implies a dynamic, relational praxis involving adaptation and recontextualisation. This is how we understand 'knowledge in application', which is a process of appropriation and reinterpretation involving confrontation with existing knowledge and productive deviation. I will explore the importance of this term for a historical and political epistemology of the humanities by describing a specific case.
