Key research themes

The iRHiST's research activities are organized around five key cross-disciplinary  research themes : history of academic heritage ; the scientific materials ; knowledge in movement ; history and philosophy of science / epistemology ; and training courses in history of science and technology.

iRHiST's key research themes

  1. History of academic heritage, particularly within ASU • Our objective is to connect those responsible for collections, archives and libraries in order to gain a better understanding of the history of scientific institutions through the prism of their heritage and to better contribute to its promotion.

  2. The scientific materials (objects, images, words, concepts, data)  • New approaches, particularly in the field of digital humanities, provide new insights into the materials used to construct science. Our objective is to renew, using this approach, our understanding of how knowledge is constructed and disseminated.

  3. Knowledge in movement • Highly current questions are raised by the way knowledge circulates in different social spaces (from technological innovation  in business to participatory science) or is subject of controversy (for instance, in the fields of health, the environment, AI...). We therefore want to include the history of science and technology within the broader framework of past and contemporary social issues.

  4. History and philosophy of science / epistemology • We aim to contribute to enriching the reflections on the relations between history and philosophy of science, but also on their possible uses to better respond to the social demands for the scientific knowledge, and help to generate new knowledge.

  5. Training courses in history of science and technology • Finally, we want to foster and encourage the mutual sharing, the promotion and exchange of teaching practices in the field of history of science and technology. The HPST minor will be better integrated within master's and doctoral programs.
